With three Autistic children and over a decade’s worth of various therapies between us, we’ve learnt a lot about how to help our children. Some therapies have worked better than others and a lot of that has depended on what our children needed at the time, who they were working with and how the therapy was delivered. But one element of success has remained consistent the whole time – when our children are having FUN, when they feel safe and connected, they achieve their best.

We’ve discovered that therapy doesn’t begin and end in a therapist’s office. Our children respond best when we take the principles we’ve learned from therapy, and apply them in the home environment. This doesn’t have to be as boring or intimidating as it sounds. Much of the ‘therapy’ we do as mothers is about joining-in with our kids, letting them take the lead, following their interests and most importantly, playing with them.

We’ve put together a selection of some fun activities we do with our children that incorporates some of the techniques we’ve learned from therapists in a fun and natural setting. Mo’therapy is about learning to trust our natural instincts as Mums – to accept and understand that we are experts when it comes to our own kids and that we can help them every day simply by spending time with them.

Please note, this is NOT a place for skilled therapeutic interventionThe ideas presented on this website are for informational/educational purposes only and are not medical advice. Our Mo’therapy activities can never replace an individualized treatment plan developed as the result of assessment, clinical observation, and collaboration between therapist, caregiver, and (if applicable) child. If you are concerned about the developmental and functional capabilities of a child in your life, then consultation with a paediatrician and team of allied health professionals is the best course of action you can take.
